Why did ceasefires take effect so late after the signature of Armistices?

I never understood why, at the end of the two World Wars, the ceasefires took effect up to 24 hours, after the signature of the armistices?! It means that men, women and may be kids continued to die, whereas the War was over! I know that, back to that time, they didn't have communication resources as we have nowadays, but still they had radios and phones, to communicate at long distance! This was easy to immediately cease all shootings and bombings! Worse, this was not in the minute, that parties decided to sign an armistice! This is something which was taking days, so they perfectly knew the war will end, so why didn't they call back their troops from battlefronts right away, instead of leaving soldiers continue to die for NOTHING?

Yes, it's a pity that fights continue for some times, even when a ceasefire is ongoing. The reason? I believe that both camps never really trust the other one. This is sad to say.

If both camps are stopping their military operation y anticipation, then one of them can take advantage of this, to attack anyhow.
