The insanity of the cost of US Presidential campaigns

What makes me really sick is the amount of money which will be swallowed by this upcoming US presidential campaign. The last time, Obama and Romney spent over $6 billion and I bet the next one will be near the $10 billion threshold! That's purely insane! All that money could be used in a much more useful way! Okay, this is private money, but I feel upset to see how people are fine in giving billions to support candidates, but could care less in doing the same to help people really in need!

Also, do they think that we, the people, are voting for the candidate who spent the most?

Damn it, how did we come to this?

I agree with 'Theodore'. I think everybody should have the same budget, with the difference being made on the ideas and the quality of the candidates, and not the size of their bank account or wealthiness of their friends/supporters.

Sorry, but I don't see the problem. All the money that politicians are spending for their campaign, benefits the US economy. Hundreds of thousands or millions of Americans are profiting directly, or indirectly because of this windfall. I prefer that politicians, and their rich friends, spend their money on US ground, than in foreign countries.

Now, if you mean that these billions could be used for more useful things, like fighting hunger, health care for everybody, etc,… then yes, but be realistic, it's not because they would spend less for the campaign that it will make more money for those just causes…

I am with LittleT on this. I really don't care who spends what. President Obama had a ton of money behind him and I was supportive of him. I'm glad he had the help, so I can't complain about a Republican being stuffed with money.

We should set a rule saying that candidates don't have the right to spend a given threshold. All candidates will have the same budget, then the difference will be made on ideas and programs, and not the one with most money.
