I've been using Avast antivirus since some years, however, now, every so often, it displays a popup window at the bottom right corner of the screen with all kind of promotional messages. Is there a way to disable this? I checked in the preferences, but didn't find anything. (I might be searching in the wrong place).

The free version of Avast is serving promotional messages. This is what you are seeing, and you can't disable it, unless you purchase the professional version.
Personally, I am fine with the deal "free software" = "promotional message"; however, those of Avast were starting to be really too annoying. Some were taking up to 1/4 of my screen! I found it excessive, so I switched to Microsoft Security Essentials, and I am very pleased with it. It seems as efficient, is light weight, and there is no annoying pop-up.

The Avast pop-ups are much worse now, especially in the last month or two. They are also absolutely enormous! The only reason why I don't drop Avast is that they keep me from entering dangerous websites.(or they used to...)
