Why aren't there more often NEW 'The Legend of Zelda' games and/or a MMORPG?

I love The Legend of Zelda, but I am so frustrated by the fact that Nintendo only releases a new episode every 4 or 5 years, and keeps re-releasing old episodes, each time they have a new console! Ocarina of Time is a masterpiece, but come on, it has been re-re-re-released tons of times!

We want more frequent Zelda games! Nintendo's artists have the skill to be able to propose new episodes more often! Other video games developers are able to do so with their main franchises, so, why not Nintendo?

If this is only a matter of a willing to propose totally new experience each time, fine, but in that case, why don't they release a new game, then, during the upcoming years, DLC, adding new environment, dungeons, etc, to spend time, until a "new" game is being released. This shouldn't be that hard. They would simply need to write and design new environment, keeping the same gameplay, and game engine. This is what other studios are doing, with success!

Now, my second "complaint", is that I believe that Zelda's Universe is rich enough to lead to an amazing MMORPG! It really has everything that MMORPG players could dream about. So why Nintendo isn't doing it? This would of course be successful.

Nothing of this could ruin the Zelda franchise, which is rock solid, and I think that fans deserve it.

So Mr Nintendo,...

By the way, thanks for this site, I think it's great idea and I hope you will be successful.

Nintendo still has an outdated approach of video games entertainment. They still defend a model which has been successful in the past, but less in phases with what gamers want today. Nintendo needs a new generation of executives and developers if they want to compete with Sony and Microsoft; otherwise, they will fade progressively, as well as their franchises.

I think Nintendo should seriously consider making a MMORPG. The Zelda's Universe is perfect for this kind of game.

Nintendo needs to get out of its comfort zone, and stop doing always the same thing. The success of Pokemon Go is a good example and should encourage them to explore new ways to exploit their franchises.

I'd like a MMORPG taking place in the Hyrule universe. Not necessarily a "Zelda" game, but I think there is a huge potential in creating an online Hyrule, that people could explore the same way a World of Warcraft.

Now, I think the biggest issue in creating a MMORPG would be to make it available at least on PC, which can be against the strategy of Nintendo. But who knows, they licensed other developers to make Smartphone games ...

I am agree with what NelsoN said.

If I was developing a MMORPG around The Legend of Zelda saga, I would set i in Hyrule, of-course, but WITHOUT Link or Zelda. They are too iconic characters for a MMORPG I think. But there are plenty of other races in the Zelda universe, to offer enough possibilities.

However, to do so, Nintendo should do a huge move toward online games. I am not sure this is what Nintendo is interested in.

Now, if you consider what was achieved with Pokémon GO, then who knows! May be one day, Nintendo will license a developer and allow it to explore the possibilities of an MMORPG.

As for the question about "Why aren't there more often NEW 'The Legend of Zelda' games", I would answer "because it takes time to make a good game". Also, Nintendo is not only rehashing Zelda's ingredient. If you look at each game (I don't mean the HD remakes), each of them is innovating, and bringing something new. Nintendo could certainly release one game every year, like Ubi soft is/was doing with the Assassin's Creed, or like FIFA, Call of Duty, etc… but face it, the quality will terribly degraded, and you'll end up getting something boring and repeating.

Each of the Zelda episodes are master pieces and unique. And that's good like that.
