I feel exactly the same as the first poster, each time we are given a history paper to do! And why do we have to learn history?! I mean, how will it help us in our life, or job?! And all these dates, events, and facts, next week we will have forgotten about them. If I want to know something about a history fact, I just check Wikipedia, open a book, or watch The History Channel.

So why waste time with this in school?!

Well, NickM, you have to learn SOMETHING in school. Just the basics, at least. Don't you want to know the basics at least? How your country came about? The history of architecture?(Come on--the Romans kicked ass-admit it).

And and far as the the History Channel goes -- don't they show Ancient Aliens?

Knowing history helps us learn not to make the same mistakes that were made in the past. Winston Churchill said, "Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it." A simple example: Suppose that every time you ate a certain food, it made you sick at your stomach. You would learn not to eat that food. It would make no sense to keep trying to eat it if you always got sick. But some politicians keep trying the same policies that failed in the past thinking those policies will be successful this time. Leftist politicians keep repeating the same failed policies that were used in the Soviet Union, Cuba, and Venezuela and expect them to work this time. That is the definition of insanity.

Your first example is inane and stultifying in any but the narrowest possible context. The discussion is on the question of academic relevance in studying history. It does not assume the questioner has a neurological disorder precluding her/him from remembering how to avoid symptoms of digestive distress. What remains is equally vacuous, banal. The dim-witted agenda presented is as thoroughly transparent as it is obtrusive. On at least the last point you share greatly with many posters here.

You're absolutely correct. Schooling is total B.S. While the law says you must attend school until you're 16, you have the right to not pay any attention to anything. I think it's important that you go through life as a total loser and moron. My local McDonalds won't totally automate any time soon, and SOMEBODY has to bag my french fries and Quarter-Pounders. It might as well be you!

To be fair, capitalist and "centrist" capitalist "democracies" in Canada, USA, and Britain have resulted in governments that regularly spy on their own citizens and are more beholden to corporate power than grassroots activism. The cost of education and campaigning ensures that any political candidate must possess inherited wealth or strong corporate ties to reach positions of power. If the goal of government is freedom and equality, economically liberal policies have failed miserably.

This note is a robot like list of tired complaints about the USA. Not a bit of thinking behind it. A mind is a terrible thing to waste, as illustrated above.

Hi NickM,

Knowing from where we came from and how we got there, will always help to lead us to where we are going.

You may feel History is something gone and useless, but this is a series of steps which contributed to make the World of today and hopefully, we can learn from what Humanity has achieved, to move forward. Ideally, we could say that we can learn from our mistakes, for not repeating them. This is why it is important to remember what Humanity has gone through to try build a brighter Future. However, and sadly, when you look at the World of today, you can also see that we continue to reproduce some mistakes, over and over again as if we still didn't understand. So may be if people were paying more attention to our History, things would be better. Understand who will want.

Nick, I agree that the dates and places aren't necessarily important. The events and what happened, though, are important. If you know history than you can use it as a guide to do things in your life. You've heard of hindsight being 20/20. The hindsight is foresight to those who pay attention. Learn from your ancestors mistakes and successes and you'll be successful without taking very many mis steps.

Going to school (and graduating) tell employers the person is willing to learn.. The grades tell them how adept that person was at learning.. The different classes that were taken tells the employer how much creative juice and imagination the person has.. The grades achieved tells us how fast and how well they can learn..

And what happens when the zombie apocalypse happens and the power goes? Gonna have to find some books fast, to find out how to make fire, how to build shelters, even how to make swords and bows to fight the oncoming horde (you don't think your ammunition is gonna last FOREVER, do ya?). 😉

Particularly for the first commentator: Your use of the word fuck doesn't add value to your opinion, nor does the rest of your comment provide any facts as to why you hate what I assume is a school assignment. Benjamin Franklin is one of the most important people in our history and the glass harmonica is only one tiny event that shows his creativity was virtually unlimited (bifocal glasses; a grabber device to extend someone's reach without a ladder; discovered how electricity works; created volunteer fire departments; and hundreds more). You don't know now whether learning history will help you in the future, but when you turn your nose up at any of the required subjects you are closing doors of opportunity where what you learn can help you get a good job. You may also be able to carry on a better conversation with other students and adults. Work the hardest on assignments you might not like, and your success In school will greatly increase your ability to earn a degree that actually helps you be successful.
If you are to do more research on Franklin, you could add 30 of the most common things Franklin invented and mention how vital it was that Franklin lived in France during the Revolutionary War to raise money to support our fight for independence. Without these troops and money, we may have lost to England. Take advantage of all learning opportunities that you encounter. This approach will give you multiple choices when it's time to find the job you want or the job you don't even know is out there waiting for you - if you are enthusiastic about your education.

Sincerely, Bob

My feminist friend, a lawyer, said history is about the mistakes and affairs of dead white men! True in part. However, when the Supreme court has to decide whether the police can look at your cell phone contacts, it is interesting to know that King George searching the homes of colonists in 1770+/- was thought to be very INTRUSIVE! Led to a REVOLUTION! Similarly, the civil war was fought so the South could NOT secede and break up the USA! So should Texas be able to have its own immigration policy because it is on the border with Mexico? History and context help a citizen understand the issues facing America and the world. It doesn't give "right" answer, but it helps form an informed opinion!

Personally I think we need to know history. We need to learn how government works, they don't teach that anymore. A college student who thinks WWII is WW #11 has to really be dumb. We need to understand how and why things are the way they are. Most people have no idea where some countries even are, let alone why they might be important.
